The impact of climate change is significant and few can argue the need for alternative ways of meeting the increasing demand for safe, sustainable, environmentally friendly energy generation.
Wellington is renowned for windy conditions and Greater Wellington Regional Council have demonstrated their preference for wind generation by awarding UK based company Renewable Energy Sources (RES) with a contract to develop a Wind Farm at Puketiro Regional Park, Pauatahanui.
With the proposed site and development understood to become the largest wind farm in the world, visually impacting areas as far away as Hutt Valley and Porirua and growing concern over health issues, not everyone can celebrate the decision to harness wind energy as the right answer.
Establishing a view of the pros and cons of wind energy is complex as the two opposing sides have very different motives. Profit, political pressures and a need to meet the needs of a wider electorate often drive those in favour, while personal losses, health concerns and wildlife issues influence the views of opponents.

Porirua City Council is addressing weaknesses in the current rural plan with the introduction of Proposed Plan Change 7 - Wind Farms and Proposed Plan Change 8 - Open Spaces. The current rural plan is too old to have sufficient protection for residents from wind farm development so these are welcome changes.
